JOB OUTLINE:

Circulation Assistants are responsible for accurate charging and discharging of library materials and audiovisual equipment, advance booking of reserves, usage statistics, and collection of fines using manual and computerized methods.  They also open and/or close the library, which includes the computer lab. Adherence to library policies, constant coverage of the circulation desk and security gate, and maintenance of good relations with the public in person and on the telephone are expected.  In addition to duties at the desk, supervisors will assign other tasks daily, such as: re-shelving, inventories, status reports, and refilling copier paper.  Assistants will provide patrons with basic direction in using the online catalog and locating various library resources.  They will also recognize and refer appropriate inquiries to reference librarians or audiovisual department staff.  Interested assistants may have some work hours scheduled for tasks concerning outreach to students or other special projects.

Assistants will document problems and unmet requests, and suggest improvements in library services.  Assistants must familiarize themselves with emergency procedures.  On weekends and some evenings, assistants may be responsible for the library without supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant should have a responsible attitude.  Experience which shows ability to  take note of details, follow procedures, provide friendly service to patrons, and communicate well with staff.  Modest typing skill.  Ability to work with minimal supervision, and willingness to quickly learn about the many policies, materials, and types of audiovisual and computer equipment found in the library.
